While auditing Facebook ad accounts recently, we discovered a critical, yet frequently overlooked setting: Creative Features.

Many performance marketers have developed the habit of immediately disabling unwanted AI features under Advantage+ Creative when setting up new ads—such as auto-generated music, image expansion, visual enhancements, and text variations. However, disabling these at the ad level does not guarantee your account is completely opted out of Meta's latest AI feature testing.

When navigating to the Creative Features section at the account level, you may find a dedicated log of active beta tests, including the exact dates they were introduced to your account. Enabling this toggle allows your account to participate in unreleased creative feature tests, which Meta often rolls out to a small percentage of impressions.

The Misconception: Account-Level vs. Ad-Level AI

A common misconception is that turning off "Test new creative features" disables all Meta AI enhancements. In reality, this account-level switch only controls experimental beta features. Standard, fully-released Advantage+ Creative features are still managed at the individual ad level, and the available features can vary significantly across different ads and accounts.

Meta's officially released Advantage+ Creative suite includes automatic aspect ratio adjustments, generative AI image expansion, and automatic music overlay. This means advertisers are actually dealing with two distinct layers of creative automation:

  • Layer 1: Account-Level Settings (Settings -> Creative Features -> Test new creative features): This determines whether your entire ad account participates in Meta's experimental, unreleased creative beta tests.
  • Layer 2: Ad-Level Settings (Ad -> Creative -> Advantage+ Creative / Enhancements): This is where you control whether a specific ad is cropped, expanded, enhanced, or overlaid with music.

Why This Matters for E-Commerce and Brand Advertisers

For brand-heavy, high-end e-commerce, or price-sensitive creatives, these automated adjustments can be highly problematic. While expanding the background of a casual UGC image might be harmless, automated AI edits can easily distort jewelry colors, alter product structures, or scramble promotional text. This goes beyond minor CTR fluctuations—it directly impacts brand integrity and can lead to discrepancies between your advertising promises and the actual product.

How to Troubleshoot Creative Discrepancies

If your live ads look different from the assets you uploaded, your troubleshooting workflow needs to adapt. Instead of just checking placement previews, asset dimensions, or version uploads, you must now verify:

  1. Whether the account is enrolled in the Creative Features beta test.
  2. Which Advantage+ Enhancements are active on the specific ad.
  3. Whether the live feed delivery matches the Ads Manager preview.
Meta's trajectory is clear: AI will continue to take over more of the creative production and delivery process. For media buyers and performance marketers, mastering these dual-layer settings is no longer optional—it is a fundamental skill required to maintain creative control and protect brand standards.
