Catalog Ads (also known as Dynamic Catalog Ads) connect your product feed directly to Meta's advertising system. Meta then automatically selects the most relevant products from your catalog and displays them to the right users. This ad format is highly effective for e-commerce merchants with large inventories, frequently changing stock, or those looking to run dynamic retargeting campaigns.
If you are a brand owner or a media buyer looking to launch these campaigns, here is a step-by-step guide to setting up Meta Catalog Ads successfully.
Step 1: Prerequisites
- Meta Business Account: A verified Meta Business Manager (or Meta Business Suite) with your associated Facebook Page and Instagram account connected.
- Meta Pixel Setup: Your website must have the Meta Pixel installed and configured to track standard events (such as ViewContent, AddToCart, and Purchase). This is crucial for dynamic retargeting and conversion optimization.
Step 2: Create a Product Catalog
- Open Commerce Manager (or go to Meta Business Suite → Settings → Data sources → Catalogs).
- Click Add / Create new catalog and select Online products (the standard option for e-commerce).
Step 3: Add Products to Your Catalog
Meta offers four primary methods to populate your catalog:
- Manual Upload: Best for stores with a small number of items. Navigate to Commerce Manager → Catalog → Items → Add items → Manual.
- Data Feed: Upload a CSV, XML, or TSV file, or use a scheduled feed URL for Meta to fetch periodically. Ensure all required fields are present, including id, title, description, availability, price, link, image_link, and brand. This is the preferred method for large inventories.
- Pixel Microdata: Automatically populate and update your catalog by mapping website events and product IDs directly from your Pixel's microdata tags.
- E-commerce Platform Integration: Directly connect platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce. This is the easiest method as it automatically syncs inventory in real-time.
Pro Tip: Create Product Sets within your catalog (grouped by category, price, promotion, or inventory level). This makes it much easier to target specific product lines when setting up your ads.
Step 4: Quality Check and Verification
- Ensure every item has a valid landing page URL (link), accurate pricing, and high-quality product images (image_link).
- After uploading your data feed, check the error logs in Commerce Manager. Meta will flag any missing fields, formatting errors, or policy violations that need to be resolved.
Step 5: Launch Your Catalog Ads in Ads Manager
- Open Ads Manager and click + Create. Select Sales as your campaign objective.
- At the Campaign level, you can enable Advantage+ catalog ads (which automatically selects products from your catalog based on user intent). Alternatively, you can select your Catalog and Product Set at the Ad Set level.
- Define your audience. You can choose Retargeting (targeting users who viewed or added products to their cart but didn't purchase) or Broad Audiences (prospecting for new customers using Meta's lookalike and behavioral targeting).
- At the Ad level, select the Catalog template. This dynamically pulls product names, prices, and images into your ad creative. You can choose formats like Carousel or Collection to showcase your products effectively.
